A doctor who specializes in treating babies and children.
PHOTOTHERAPY
Light therapy to treat jaundice. Bright blue fluorescent lights, called bililights, are placed over the baby's incubator. Treatment usually lasts between 3-7 days.
PLACENTA
An organ which develops in the uterus during pregnancy, providing nutrients for the fetus and eliminating its waste products.
PNEUMOGRAM
A sleep study, monitoring the baby's breathing and heart rate during sleep to detect any abnormal breathing patterns.
POLYDACTYLISM
Polydactylism, or having one or more extra fingers or toes, is probably the most common abnormality of development found at birth. Polydactylism is reported in about 2 per 1000 children.
POSTNATAL CARE
Medical care for both newborn and mother during the first six weeks after birth.
POSTNATAL DEPRESSION
A condition characterized by sadness, impatience, restlessness, and an inability to care for the baby.
PREMATURE BABY - PREEMIE
A premature baby or preemie is one who is born before 37 weeks of gestation.
PREMATURE LABOR
Labor that begins before 37 weeks.
