Van Houten  Sextuplets

Amy and Ben Van Houten are parents of sextuplets, Gerrit Calvin, Samantha Clair, Nolan Benjamin, Peyton Scott and Kennedy Alexis. John Paul, the only ones in Michigan and one of a dozen in the nation.

The six were delivered naturally at DeVos Children's Hospital, born over three days in 2004, Jan. 7, 16 and 17.

The Van Houten sextuplets were born at 23 to 25 weeks gestation and weighed a combined 9 pounds, 2 ounces.

Van Houten used fertility drugs to become pregnant.

The four boys and two girls, born three months early, have overcome many medical problems, but some remain, especially for Gerrit, who can't move on his own and has the intellectual development of an infant. Both Gerrit and John continue to be fed through stomach tubes.

Volunteers from the Hamilton, Michigan community and the church in Holland the Van Houtens attend helped them through round-the-clock feedings, diaper changes and therapies in the early years. The couple now manages with family help, especially Amy's mom, Sandy Reimink, and Ben's mom, Karen Van Houten.
