Abygail and Madysen Fitterer Conjoined Twins

A skilled team of 40 dedicated doctors successfully separated 5-month-old conjoined twins, Abygail and Madysen Fitterer, from North Dakota during a six-hour operation Wednesday at the Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital in Rochester Minnesota.
Born August 8, 2006 at the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, Fairview, Minnesota, to Suzy and Stacy Fitterer, the girls were joined at the chest.
The twins have been at Mayo since October when doctors implanted tissue expanders to slowly expand the skin enough to close the incisions from the separation surgery.

Dr. Christopher Moir, the lead surgeon, said he expects the girls to spend at least a few weeks in intensive care.
The girls are the daughters of Stacy and Suzy Fitterer of Bismarck North Dakota.
According to updates from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Abygail and Madysen Fitterer continue to make progress since their surgery.
While they still remain sedated and are breathing with assistance of ventilators, they occasionally open their eyes and move their arms and legs intentionally.
They also are able to be positioned in a more natural sleeping position for the first time, and physical therapy has resumed.
