Unique Twin Birth
Frieda gave birth to twin boys in New Jersey, after her and her husband of 38 years decided to go through with in-vitro fertilisation because they wanted another child closer in age to their youngest son, aged six.
Frieda told NBCs Today Show, "It's really basically about women and empowerment," .

"I don't feel like I went through a lot of trauma during delivery or even through the process of being pregnant, Age has been redefined," Birnbaum said.

She and her husband, Ken, a New York City attorney, have been married for 38 years and have three other children, sons, ages 33 and six and a daughter, 29.

"I couldn't be happier about the way it worked out," Ken Birnbaum told "Today."

She went on to say: "I'm here now and just as energetic as I was when I was in my 40's or 30's, even more so because I know myself more and I suspect I'll be the same person then. And everywhere I go people are just thrilled for me.

"I had a strong urge to give and the energy to do something about it and I have more of an urge now to be a nurturing parent, than I did when I was younger. But I guess it's about empowerment."
Their daughter has said she worries about Birnbaum taking care of the twins when they are in their teens and she is in her late 70s, concerns dismissed by Birnbaum.

"I hope I'm a role model for my daughter, that when she gets older that she can make her own decisions based on who she is rather than what society dictates," she said.
Frieda Birnbaum, a 60 year old New Jersey psychologist who conceived with the help of in-vitro fertilisation, had the boys, Josh and Jaret, at Hackensack University Medical Centre. The hospital reported that she was the oldest American woman to give birth to twins.

Birnbaum said "I'm very excited," as she arrived home in Saddle River, New Jersey with the twins and her husband, Ken Birnbaum, a lawyer.

She said that people who consider new motherhood at her age inappropriate "need to get ready for what's coming up in our society."
Frieda Birnbaum is not the first older woman to have given birth to twins.
In July 2006, Lauren Cohen, aged 59, gave birth to babies Gregory and Giselle who were conceived using donor eggs.

Carmela Bousada convinced doctors that she was only 55 - the age limit for treatment at the fertility centre she chose - and gave birth to healthy twin boys, called Pau and Christian, after a difficult pregnancy in December last year - seven days before her 67th birthday.
